Local legends narrate the story of a young bride named Jaai who tragically lost her life during a storm while crossing the lake to her in-laws’ home on Parikud Island. Over time, she came to be worshipped as Kalijai, believed to protect the people and waters of Chilika.
Historical references suggest that the present temple structure was built in 1717 by Sri Jagannath Mansingh, the ruler of Banapur (as noted by Dr. Radha Charan Panda in The History of Parikud, 1930). Today, the temple stands as a powerful symbol of faith, resilience, and cultural heritage.
